The Downtown Art Project is a studio space for economically disadvantaged
artists which commenced operations on January 8, 2001. The opportunity
to work in this space is open to anyone who is serious about pursuing
their art and does not have sufficient financial resources or access
to studio space. The studio can accommodate about ten full time
artists and currently we have space available. There is also the
opportunity to use the space on a part time basis.
We are open from 10am to 5pm Monday through Friday, including most
holidays. We use a large room in the African American Community
Service Agency at 6th and Julian Street in downtown San Jose, California.
The building was originally a fire house, built in 1924, and we
use the room where the fire engines were housed! Art supplies, hot
coffee, drafting tables, easels, radio/CD player, rest rooms, access
to a computer, and locked storage space are provided.
This web site features the art of several of our participating
artists. If you wish to purchase original artwork or prints, make
a tax-deductible donation to the Project or inquire about working
in the studio, please contact us at sjdowntownart@aol.com
or call us at (408) 348-1431.
The founders wish to dedicate this project to the glory of Jesus
Christ. We welcome artist participants, visitors, volunteers and
donors of all religious creeds without exception.
